Wired vs. Wireless Doorbells

Choosing and buying doorbells was relatively easier before wireless doorbells entered the model. There were few models and limited specifications. But the arrival of wireless doorbells changed the scenario and sparked a new debate. Which is better, wired or wireless? This debate has been raging for quite some time now. While wired doorbells have been around for years and are still preferred by a huge number of people, wireless doorbells are new in the market and have caught the fascination of the generation next who prefer living in a wire free world. The sound quality and practicality of wireless units has also improved by leaps and bounds in a very short span of time. So, the question rages on. Here we draw a comparison between the two types of doorbells. We analyze each type closely on the basis of parameters like ease of installation, reliability, price and sound range. Consider their benefits and limitations and then let you decide which one is best suited for you.

Price

  • wired doorbells are always cheaper than their wireless counterparts. While basic models cost around $5 to 10 less, high end models have a difference of almost $20 to 30. So if you are on a budget, then wired doorbells are clearly a better option.

Installation

  • Installing wired doorbells is not something that everyone can do. Most people are uncomfortable with the thought of running wires throughout the house. wireless doorbells on the other hand can be installed in minutes. There is hardly anything to install except mounting the button and the receiver. So if ease of installation is a criterion, then wireless doorbells clearly have the edge.

Aesthetic appeal

  • If you are looking for an aesthetic design, then wired doorbells are the best choice for they have hundreds of designs, shapes and materials to choose from. Wireless doorbells on the other hand have very few designs. Even the existing decorative wireless doorbells are quite expensive. However, newer designs are expected to arrive in the market very soon.

Portability

  • Dismounting and moving wired doorbells around the house can be a pain. The wiring will have to be pulled down and then reinstalled. Certainly not very easy or feasible. Wireless doorbells on the other hand are flexible and portable. You can dismount the receiver and install it at any convenient place in the home without having to spend too much time on it. Plug-in models can be plugged into any electrical outlet whereas battery powered ones are even easier to use.

Sound quality and tunes

  • The sound quality and the range of tunes are clearly better in wired doorbells. Wireless doorbells are known for flaky performance when there is external interference. But they are also catching up soon. Some long range units have an operation range of up to 500 feet and they provide crystal clear sound. The wireless CD quality sound doorbell has also been a revelation of sorts. But wired doorbells are clearly the winner here.

The final verdict

It is very difficult to come to a conclusion and choose one of these two. Each has its own share of pros and cons. While wired doorbells are clearly a more reliable option, wireless doorbells are the more convenient one. Eventually, it is a matter of one’s personal choice and requirements.
